CASA-NYC annually serves more than 1,000 of the nearly 10,000 children in foster care in the five boroughs of New York City. Most of these children were removed from their homes due to allegations of abuse or neglect by their parents or caretakers. The vast majority of these were neglect cases stemming from a wide range of circumstances, including mental illness, domestic violence or substance abuse - and very often exacerbated by poverty and structural inequalities.
